{"id":32,"date":"2019-03-28T14:15:39","date_gmt":"2019-03-28T14:15:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nctc.mycareerfocus.org\/spring-2019-volume-4-issue-1\/new-mens-grooming-comes-to-cosmetology\/"},"modified":"2019-03-28T21:00:43","modified_gmt":"2019-03-28T21:00:43","slug":"new-mens-grooming-comes-to-cosmetology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/nctc.mycareerfocus.org\/spring-2019-volume-4-issue-1\/new-mens-grooming-comes-to-cosmetology\/","title":{"rendered":"New Men\u2019s Grooming  Comes to Cosmetology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">In cosmetology, hair stylists have to be responsive to their clients in order to build a following, and you might say administrators at NCTC followed that model when they decided to start a barbering certification program in the Cosmetology department, starting this fall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/nctc.mycareerfocus.org\/spring-2019-volume-4-issue-1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/03\/Cosmetology2-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nctc.mycareerfocus.org\/spring-2019-volume-4-issue-1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/03\/Cosmetology2-200x300.jpg 200w, http:\/\/nctc.mycareerfocus.org\/spring-2019-volume-4-issue-1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/03\/Cosmetology2-768x1152.jpg 768w, http:\/\/nctc.mycareerfocus.org\/spring-2019-volume-4-issue-1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/03\/Cosmetology2-683x1024.jpg 683w, http:\/\/nctc.mycareerfocus.org\/spring-2019-volume-4-issue-1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/03\/Cosmetology2.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Nationally, barbering is making a comeback in a big way and, in fact, the National Association of Barber Boards of America claims it is the fastest growing profession, with recent stats projecting that men\u2019s grooming will represent a $26 billion industry by 2020.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>North Texas has its own uptick in elite barber shops, notes Stephanie Lindsey, NCTC\u2019s Human Services and Hospitality division chair, and resultingly, her cosmetology students have been clamoring for barbering training.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">\u201cCosmetologists are not allowed by the state to use straight razors like the licensed barber,\u201d Lindsey explains, adding that a stylist is required to hold a barber license in order to work at a barber shop, so being dual-licensed for both barbering and cosmetology will make students \u201cmore marketable\u201d and increase their career options.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Requiring 300 clock hours and 11 semester credit hours, NCTC\u2019s barbering Occupational Skills Award will run 16 weeks and be offered during each long semester, fall and spring.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Lindsey reports that many current students and former students have already told her they\u2019re planning to take these courses, and she\u2019s hoping it might also attract more males into the Cosmetology program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">In addition, Lindsey says NCTC is making a bit of \u201chair history\u201d with the new barbering curriculum \u2014 becoming only the second community college in Texas to offer barbering instruction. (The first program, she notes, opens this summer at Weatherford College.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Former student Rachel Kniss, age 31, has already joined the ranks of NCTC cosmetology alumni who are psyched about signing up for the new program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">\u201cI\u2019ve always been interested in men\u2019s grooming and think it will be really beneficial to have this extra training for my career development,\u201d says Kniss, who\u2019s currently employed as a hair stylist at a Gainesville location of Great Clips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Kniss says her journey to cosmetology took a roundabout path. She took general classes at NCTC after high school, before \u201clife events sort of got in the way.\u201d She had a son and then returned to school when she was 25, waiting tables and bartending while \u201cbasically taking about a semester of coursework per year.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">In May 2018, Kniss graduated from NCTC\u2019s Cosmetology program, got licensed by August and took her job at Great Clips shortly thereafter.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A single mother of an 8-year-old and an 18-month-old, she says she\u2019s excited about NCTC\u2019s new Cosmetology Operator to Class A Barber Crossover program and has already told Lindsey, \u201cSign me up!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Contained within the Cosmetology department on NCTC\u2019s Gainesville campus, the program\u2019s new \u201cBarber Shop\u201d curriculum is set for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6-9:30 as well as Saturdays from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. \u2014 when real-life clients will come by for their grooming needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\"><b>For more information, contact Stephanie Lindsey at <a href=\"mailto:slindsey@nctc.edu\">slindsey@nctc.edu<\/a> and (940) 668-3314.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In cosmetology, hair stylists have to be responsive to their clients in order to build a following, and you might say administrators at NCTC followed that model when they decided to start a barbering certification program in the Cosmetology department, starting this fall.
