“Cosmetology is a really fun, amazing field to work in where there’s always opportunity to expand and grow. You never have to feel stagnant in this profession unless you just plain give up,” says Cassie Lewis, a current Esthetics student.
Cassie always wanted to get her Cosmetology license but found other schools too expensive. She studied Cosmetology on the NCTC Gainesville Campus where she received her certificate to become a hairstylist two years ago. Cassie began working at the JCPenney salon in Denton, Texas, which has allowed her to work full time and earn full benefits, which can be rare in this field.
Cassie never realized Esthetics existed as a career until she attended NCTC, and she didn’t realize it was a field she would be interested in until she started working as a hairstylist. Starting a new career caused her stress, which triggered a skin disorder known as psoriasis. Having this disease is what made Cassie think about obtaining her Esthetics certificate, as Estheticians are also known as skincare specialists.
While working at the JCPenney salon, Cassie felt the need to expand her abilities. Cassie made the decision to return to NCTC to obtain her dual license as a Cosmetologist and Esthetician. Cassie’s future goals include owning and operating her own full-service salon and spa. She is currently considering returning to NCTC to earn her Instructor’s certificate.
Cassie has enjoyed her time at NCTC and appreciates the “real world” experience she has received while working with clients in the NCTC salon-esthetic labs. Speaking to this experience, Cassie said, “It lets me pretend I’m at work which helps me feel that much more prepared when I start working.” Cassie will graduate with her Esthetics certificate from NCTC in May 2018.
